Block Paving Driveway Cleaning And Sealing Guide

Jul 10, 2020
Many people attempt to tackle their patio or driveway themselves, armed with nothing but a jet washer and a great deal of enthusiasm! They do not appreciate that they could be accelerating the degradation of the colour and the surface of their block paved driveway or patio. This guide walks you through the correct way to clean and seal a block paved surface for maximum long-term results.

Cleaning

What we aim to achieve is to restore your driveway to its former self. Over time there will have been a lot of surface degradation of the blocks. This would have been caused by use, but also regular pressure washing. Every time the drive is pressure washed it can add the equivalent of 5 to 10 years exposure to the elements in wear and tear. To start, we need to get the drive and the block paving as clean as possible and then properly protect it with a sealer so that no further damage to the colour and surface occurs.

To clean areas of algae and lichens as effectively as possible, we apply just the right amount of our high-quality cleaning products. This will enable the driveway to be cleaned at a lower pressure, which is important to protect the blocks as well as kill off those unwanted organisms so that it becomes far cleaner.

Whether your paving is a brick type paver or more of an antique paver, the principles of the cleaning, the preparation, and the sealing, don't really change. The thing to remember is that your pavers, regardless of design, are laid onto a two-inch bed of sand. During the cleaning process, regardless of the type of pressure washer being used, you're pumping a lot of water into that surface.

Before you can apply your sealing products that moisture needs to get out. It may be necessary to leave your driveway a week before coming back to carry out the next part of the process, the sanding and then the sealing.

Sanding

Another important thing to remember with block paving cleaning is that the washing of the paving will generally get the surface of the blocks clean, but it's the joints that are very important.

Over time, what started off as nice, clean sand will have turned to mud. The sealers will do an excellent job of solidifying the sand and sealing the sand, but what they can't do is seal mud, particularly damp mud. Before we start our sanding process, we always spend a little bit of time scraping any remaining mud from joints.

It is important to avoid sand on the surface of the blocks and make sure your joints are properly filled with no voids.

Sealing

When it comes to sealing, what we will do is to get the sealer deep into the block and the sand and set those joints, so they are rock solid. If you see this example here, you would struggle to push any kind of object in the joints. They're really well sealed.

As you can see, a secondary benefit is that the sealer itself really brings the driveway to life and enhances the natural colours. When it comes to coverage, we apply a thick layer of high-quality sealer. If you spread it too thin, you won’t see as great a transformation, and in a few months’ time you may wish you hadn't spent the money at all.

Our sealers for block paving help prevent weed growth and protect from oil stains. The sealers are suitable for most types of block paving and cobble pavers. All our block paving sealer is manufactured to ISO 9001 quality, so you know you are getting the highest quality product.

The Benefits of Sealer:
  • Acts as a weed inhibitor
  • Improves oil stain resistance to block paved surfaces
  • Hard wearing
  • Long lasting

Maintenance

If you're looking to get the maximum benefit from the work that's being carried out then a little bit of routine maintenance makes sense.

A couple of times a year just to take a broom and sweep your driveway clean. Don't let the muck build up in the joints. Occasionally, put a light biocide over them just to stop any moss and algae beginning to establish themselves in the joints. That's the best way to get the maximum protection from not only the elements, but also potential weed growth as well.

Focusing on the patio areas in your garden, we have compiled a helpful guide detailing the best methods of caring for and cleaning it. Whether you are someone who needs to get down to the nitty-gritty and deep clean your patio or are merely looking for new methods to try, we feel confident you will find something helpful below. Read on for more! What You Can Do While we understand there is often a desire to clean your patio yourself with bleach and a pressure washer, this is not the recommended method for getting the results you’re probably hoping for. In order to get the best outcome, there may come a time when you need to engage the services of a company such as ours to assist with this messy and time cosnuming task. However, while that may be the case, that is not to say there aren’t jobs that you can do to prepare the patio for cleaning. If you have a range of patio furniture, you want to ensure these are safely stored out the way before conducting any cleaning. While some people prefer to store their patio furniture out of the way during the winter months, this is not the case for everyone, so it is worth considering if your furniture is still out but covered. The last thing you want is for the furniture to get ruined or damaged during the cleaning process! Once you have cleared a space for yourself and anyone else who might be cleaning the patio, you can consider any other factors that might need dealing with before you can crack on with the cleaning process. Getting rid of any pesky, stubborn weeds that may have grown through the cracks is an ideal place to start and will make things easier for any professionals you bring in to complete the job. This leads us to the following point. Using Professional Services There are many things you could do as a homeowner or tenant to attend to the cleanliness and ongoing maintenance of your patio. There are even more benefits to using the services of a company such as our own. For a project that can assumed to by easy and a piece of cake isn’t always so! Of course the current state of your patio will dictate the attention it requires and what level of cleaning is needed. For those patios that are in dire need of some TLC, it may well be the case that certain chemicals are essential as a means of bringing the tired tiles to their best once more. Whether you are searching for patio cleaning in Cornwall or Cardiff, you can expect to find the same techniques and methods used by professionals all over. What’s more, companies like ours can provide you with top quality products, like those provided by Smartseal solution, which not only cleans the patio but also accentuates the underlying colours of the surface while protecting the patio slabs moving forward. Ideal for achieving standout patio tiles for any upcoming garden parties! By using the services of a professional patio cleaning company, like ours, you can rest assured that the job will be done to the best standard and in a set time frame. You needn’t worry about any pesky dirt on your patio derailing your upcoming plans, that is for sure! Not to forget that by using the services of a professional, you are minimising the risk of something going wrong. While we recognise that most people would understand how to use a pressure washer on their patio or how to use the right chemicals to remove unwanted dirt and grime, there is always the chance that a DIY job will cause more harm than good to your patio slabs and the joins between them. As the summer months continue, and with the easing of lockdown restrictions, our social calendars are set to receive a bit of a shock following an extended period of emptiness. That winter felt like a long one indeed! From an aethestic point of view it may well be the time to think about getting your patio in tip-top condition, but whether you intend to show it off with endless visitors there are actually other benefits to regular patio cleaning which we will go into a bit more detail now. Benefits of Cleaning Your Patio Regularly It seems somewhat obvious, but by regularly cleaning your patio, you significantly reduce the effort you will need to put in when you next clean it. Scheduling a day each month or every few months to give your patio a clean will make sure it looks its best at all times. What’s more, you could consider cleaning your patio more frequently during times of the year when you are using it the most. The choice is entirely up to you. Using particular products that protect exterior surfaces such as patio slabs, imprinted concrete and block paving are also a huge help to keeping the cleaning effort to a minimum. When applied properly they can help keep all unwanted dirt, weeds, moss and mould at bay. The build up of moss and mould is definitely something to focus on as they can be potentially harmful and are certainly a slip hazard. Once they take hold they can be like an infurating weed that requires a lot of attention and effort to get rid of. We all know the UK climate encourages growth of these nasties so you will no doubt have experience of the stuff growing on your outdoor surfaces. Regularly cleaning your patio, especially at the first signs of this growths, will make sure moss and other moulds do not get the opportunity to take over. And lastly if your hard landscaped garden is your pride and joy you will most certainly want to protect and extend the life of your investment. Quality paving isn’t cheap but with regular cleaning, and in our opinion the focus and attention of a professional service provider, can help you maintain your patio and get years of enjoyment from you outdoor space.
